9/16/99
THE SUFFOLK COUNTY EXECUTIVE'S OFFICE ORDERED A MANDATORY EVACUATION FOR ALL OF FIRE ISLAND AT APPROXIMATELY 8:35AM. SALTAIRE'S EMERGENCY SERVICES PERSONNEL NOTIFIED ALL RESIDENTS IN THE VILLAGE TO EVACUATE.

A HURRICANE WARNING IS ISSUED FOR THE EASTERN END OF LONG ISLAND, AND A TROPICAL STORM WARNING FOR THE REST OF LONG ISLAND. THIS MEANS POSSIBLE WINDS OF 40 TO 75 MILES PER HOUR. THE ASTRONOMICAL TIDE IS LOW, WHICH IS A HUGE ADVANTAGE FOR OUR BEACH, AND THEREFOR STORM SURGES WILL BE FROM 5 TO 8 FEET.

OUR BEACH IS IN AS GOOD SHAPE AS CAN BE EXPECTED HEADING INTO THE STORM EVENT. THE EYE OF THE STORM IS EXPECTED TO HIT ISLIP LATER TODAY. IT IS MOVING FAST, WHICH WILL FURTHER MINIMUZE ANY DAMAGE TO SALTAIRE.
